PATROL BASE MAHAWIL, Iraq - U.S. forces handed over Patrol Base Mahawil to the Iraqi government in a ceremony Sunday in Babil Province, leaving only two U.S. bases in the province.

This brings the total number of U.S. bases either closed or transferred in United States Division-South to 13 since February, with six more scheduled to close before Sept. 1.

The transfer was officially completed with the signing of documents by Capt. Michael Washburn, commander of Company A, 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, and Sameer Alhaddad, the representative for receivership of the chief of staff of the Iraqi prime minister.

The fair-market value of the property transferred by 2nd Bn., 69th AR - which is assigned to 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division - came to more than $500,000, according to the documents.

The company has been at PB Mahawil since October 2009, working with the Iraqi Army’s 2nd Bn., 31st Bde., 8th Div., commanded by Col. Muhammad Khudair Saloom.
