Rozi Khan was elected the new district leader of Uruzgan in the first free election in the southern district of Chora on June 7. Khan won the elections with a majority of 851 votes.
KABUL, Afghanistan - Around 250 men of the Afghan National Army (ANA), assisted by ISAF troops, provided security as 2600 voters in the Chora district of Uruzgan elected a new district leader during the first free election in the southern district of Chora June 7.

The election was well received and without incident.  Attendance exceeded expectations as Chora's citizens waited to vote for their favourite candidate then received their right thumb mark, proof of the important step they had accomplished.

In a race between six candidates, Rozi Khan was chosen by the local population to be the new leader of Chora district.  Khan won the elections with a majority of 851 votes (almost one third of the vote). His victory was decisive and he was immediately sworn in by the highest judge from Tarin Kowt, and showered with candy, a mark of recognition.

Assadullah Hamdam, the governor of the province who organised this election, was more than pleased by the electoral process, as were all Chora citizens.

The significance of the elections in Chora are not only a tangible step in the future development of this district, but they also stand as a fine precedent for the coming elections in the districts of Khaz Uruzgan and Shahidi Hazas.
