WARNER ROBINS, GA - The First Annual "Tour de Moose" Bike Ride on Robins Air Force Base will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2010. The event is sponsored by the 116th Air Control Wing (ACW) - known as JSTARS - and is open to all ages and types of bike riders. The 116th ACW, commanded by Brig. Gen. Tom "Moose" Moore, is planning a morning for families to take a tour of Robins Air Force Base and engage in some fun-fit activities.
The ride will start at 8:00 a.m. at the Museum of Aviation and feature 7, 15 and 30-mile routes around the base which end back at the Museum. A free bike-safety "rodeo" will be held at the Museum for ages 4-9 from 8:30 am - 9:30 am. and a Fit-Family Boot Camp will also be held starting at 8:45 am to "get the family moving."
As part of the bike ride, selected aircraft at the Museum of Aviation and on Robins Air Force Base will be on display during and after the race. The Museum will have open a C-141 Starlifter from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm and other aircraft like the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-4C Phantom, and the T-38 trainer will be on display in the Century of Flight Hangar. The B-1 and B-52 bombers and the A-10 fighter plane in front of the Museum will have crew members by them to answer questions. In the aircraft alert "Christmas Tree" area on the bike ride route, crew members will be giving tours of other aircraft including the JSTARS E-8C.
The fee for the bike ride is $25 per rider and $30 after June 18. Participants age 16 and under may ride for $10 and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for all activities. All riders must bring a riding helmet and a picture ID is required at registration. Due to increased security on Robins AFB, ID cards will be held until riders complete the course. Riders may register on line at www.active.com or www.museumofaviation.org or at the Museum of Aviation that morning between 6:30am - 7:30 am. All riders get a "Tour de Moose" t-shirt. Bike rodeo participants, who would like a $10 t-shirt, must register in advance by June 18.
Two free bike check clinics are being offered prior to the ride at The Bike Store in Warner Robins, one of the co-sponsors of the ride. Located at 4025 Watson, Blvd, Suite 240, the store will hold the clinics on May 17 and June 7 at 6:30 pm. Preregistration for the clinics is not required and riders do not have to bring their own bike. The clinic will cover things like changing tires, fixing chains and making sure bikes are ready for summer riding. Call the Warner Robins store at (478) 744-2453 or the Macon store at (478) 744-2453 or go to www.thebikestore.com. People can bring their bikes into either location for a free bike safety check.
