LONDONDERRY, NH - Children in Iraq received hugs from some cuddly American friends, thanks to local teenagers of Londonderry, NH.
A collection of Beanie Babies was shipped to Iraq by a contingency of teens who spearheaded a drive to collect the small stuffed animals for the organization, Beanies for Baghdad.
Sisters Tristen and Amy Curtin, and Matt Derkrikorian, all of Londonderry, showed off a towering pyramid of boxes at the Curtin home on Griffin Road.
All counted, the effort collected more than 2,900 stuffed toys. The teens had done a Beanies for Baghdad drive previously, but this time was more successful, they said. "The last time we collected only half as much," Tristen said. "It was really unexpected."
To collect the Beanie Babies the teens placed collection boxes around the Greater Derry and Londonderry areas.
The Beanies for Baghdad was started a few years ago by a group of American soldiers in Iraq and has grown into a global humanitarian effort.
Thousands of bean bag toys, plus school supplies and other items, have made their way to Iraqi children.
Debbie Curtin said approximately 730 pounds of stuffed cheer was sent off to Iraq.
When Debbie realized the need for winter items for the children in both Iraq and Afghanistan, she set up a drop off at Mack's Apples Farm Market and requested hats and coats to go along with the beanie babies. People don't realize how cold winters are and many children have very little to keep them warm.
"It's kind of symbolic to have the drive at Mack's," Curtin said. "Like America and apple pie."
Beanies for Baghdad continues to send thousands of beanie babies and other items to troops all over Iraq and Afghanistan.
