SOUTHHAMPTON, MA. - Sue and Pete Morin of Southampton Massachusetts, started sending items to the medical wing ofBalad Air Force Base in October 2006, where a Chaplain friend was stationed. When asked how they could help him, he said, "Well, we’re almost out of Beanies," and at this point they realized the need of our military units to distribute toys to thechildren. Soon boxes were set up at their bookshop and, "Beanies for Balad," was born. Volunteers from all over the city set up boxes in various locations, such as schools, churches, town halls, restaurants, and going door to door to collect beanie babies and other items to send. Movie night admissions became beanie babies being donated in a box, and scouts troops collecting to earn badges. Minors on probation used the program for community service hour requirements. Beanie Captains were instrumental in setting up innovative ways to generate donations, including knitting groups to make warm items for the children for the cold winters. Red Hat groups, brownie troops and the local USO all contributed.
In 2007 their friend stationed at Balad Air Force base returned home but their enthusiasm continued and soon partnered with, "Beanies for Baghdad" in joint efforts to help our soldiers and the children in the war-torn areas.
"Beanies for Baghdad" is now sending to units in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Landstuhl Hospital.
May of 2008 will mark the fifth year of sending beanie babies, stuffed animals and other items and giving our soldiers the opportunity to spread some joy and put smiles on the faces of so many with little to smile about.
