FORT BRAGG, N.C. - The U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School named its Soldier and noncommissioned officer of the year for 2009 in a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Auditorium, May 14.
Sgt. 1st Class James Graham, an instructor with Company E, 4th Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne), and Spc. Rajneel Singh, and administrative assistant assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters, USAJFKSWCS, were chosen as the NCO and Soldier of the Year, respectfully.
Singh was also the USAJFKSWCS Soldier of the Year last year.
The runners up in the competition were Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Panchot, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, USAJFKSWCS, and Spc. Codi Keto, Company C, Support Battalion, 1st SWTG (A).
They were among nine competitors vying for the opportunity to represent the command at the annual U.S. Army Special Operations Command NCO and Soldier of the year competition.
Over four days the Soldiers and NCOs competed in events designed to test their mental and physical abilities.
Soldiers were required to demonstrate a variety of military and leadership skills including a physical fitness test, live fire weapons qualification, land navigation, a comprehensive general-subjects exam, written essay, warrior-task testing and a mystery event—a live fire obstacle course in which the Soldier had to engage targets with both the M-4 Carbine and M-9 pistol. The final event was an oral board designed to test the Soldiers communication skills and general military knowledge.
"The accomplishments of these Soldiers, not just the winners and runner ups, all of them, represent what we look for in Soldiers: commitment, character and intellect," said Maj. Gen. Thomas R. Csrnko, commanding general of the USAJFKSWCS.
The winners of the competition were awarded the Army Commendation Medal and presented a U.S. Army Infantry Saber, along with a commanding general and command sergeant major coin of excellence.
