PAKTIKA PROVINCE, Afghanistan -

 
A firing party made up of Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen perform a 21-gun salute in honor of the fallen during a Memorial Day ceremony held at Forward Operating Base Sharana in eastern Afghanistan's Paktika province, May 30. The ceremony included the lowering of the flag, the playing of taps and a prayer by the base chaplain.
 
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. John Cardona, of Fort Mill, S.C., lowers the U.S. flag to half-staff while Petty Officer 2nd Class Juan Alicea, of Staten Island, N.Y., renders a salute during a Memorial Day ceremony held at Forward Operating Base Sharana, May 30. Both are members of the Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team, a joint team assigned to help promote governance, development and agriculture initiatives throughout the province located in Eastern Afghanistan. Cardona is deployed from Battery Bravo, 1st Battalion, 178th Field Artillery Regiment, South Carolina Army National Guard and Alicea is deployed from Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center, Norfolk, Va.
 
Air Force Senior Airman Kourtney Long, a native of Mesa, Ariz., (right) and Airman 1st Class Patricia Zema, a native of Temecula, Calif., participate in a Memorial Day ceremony held at Forward Operating Base Sharana in eastern Afghanistan's Paktika province, May 30. The two airmen are members of the FOB Sharana Provost Marshals Office, an Air Force team assigned to the base to provide law enforcement and security. Long and Zema are on a six-month deployment from the 6th Security Forces Squadron, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
