Target Selects Operation Gratitude As 1 of 10 Charities to Receive a Portion of $3 Million

VAN NUYS, CA - Operation Gratitude announces its participation in Bullseye Gives  (www.Facebook.com/Target), the first-ever Target giving campaign on Facebook®. From May 10 through May 25, Operation Gratitude's Facebook fans, supporters, volunteers, donors and care package recipients can vote for the organization to win a portion of the $3 million charitable donation pledged by its Corporate Sponsor, Target.  The more votes registered for Operation Gratitude, the larger the donation it will receive.

"The timing of Bullseye Gives is perfect for Operation Gratitude," exclaimed founder Carolyn Blashek.  "The campaign is taking place during Military Appreciation Month, when we hold our annual Patriotic Drive to assemble and ship 40,000+ care packages to our Military men and women in harm's way.  Every vote for Operation Gratitude could send another package, and what could be more Patriotic than to vote in support of our Military!" she noted.

Founded in March 2003, Operation Gratitude annually sends 100,000 care packages individually addressed to U.S. Service Members deployed in combat zones.  The packages contain an assortment of snack foods, entertainment items, hygiene products and personal letters of appreciation written by Americans across the country.  Each package costs the non-profit, volunteer organization $11 in postage and production expenses.  All funds received from the Target Bullseye Gives campaign will be used to pay the $1.2 Million of postage expenses needed to send 100,000 Patriotic and Holiday care packages in May-June and November-December.

Each charity in the contest will be granted that portion of the $3 million dollars equal to the percentage of overall votes it receives during the voting campaign on Facebook.  All votes and dollars allocated will be updated in real time on the Target Facebook page throughout the two weeks of the contest.  Site visitors can vote once each day, everyday from May 10-May 25.  The final donation allocated to each charity will be announced on May 26.

"At Target, our reputation is built on our legacy of giving, and Bullseye Gives is an incredible opportunity for us to continue to engage Target guests and the online community," said Laysha Ward, president of community relations, Target.  "This is a unique way to help raise awareness of the important work these deserving charities do and increase localized volunteerism nationwide."

The selected charities include those within Target's core areas of giving, as well as causes that are of specific interest to its guests. In addition to Operation Gratitude, the other nine charities participating include the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Feeding America, HandsOn Network/Points of Light Institute, Kids In Need, Parent Teacher Association, National Park Foundation, Red Cross, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®, and The Salvation Army.
