Camp Taji, Iraq - Anyone walking down the main hallway of the 1123rd Transportation Company headquarters September 18, might have suspected an inspection of some type was coming soon. After all, the scent of weapons grade lubricant oil filled the air, cleaning rags and towels were scattered about, and some M4 Carbines, M249 squad automatic weapons, and M9 pistols were being serviced by Soldiers. However, this was just another day for the Arkansas Army National Guard Soldiers maintaining their equipment properly.
In their first few months in Iraq, the unit supply office received a couple "No-Go's" during routine inspections from their higher headquarters the 1st Squadron, 152nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Sustainment Brigade. However, every monthly inspection since then has shown great improvement in each and every aspect. More to the point, they rarely receive any type of "No-Go" during one of the rigorous inspections that cover everything from, making sure that the vault is properly secured at all times to weapons storage and maintenance to property accountability to name a few.
"Inspections are very important to us; it shows everyone else that we are actually doing our job, keeping up with everything, making sure that everything is where it is supposed to be," said the unit armorer, Sgt. Dillon Nichols, a native of Hot Springs, Ark. "I like my job a lot and it makes me feel good to know that I work with very knowledgeable individuals and they helped me get very good at my job, since I arrived late into country. They made sure I did the right things."
Nichols is assisted in the supply section by Staff Sgt. Ryan Webb, a native of Benton, Ark., and Spc. Theresea Stanfield, a native of White Hall, Ark., and the supply clerk. Together they insure supplies get to the Soldiers, order clothing, and take care of all supporting documents, such as, lateral transfers from unit to unit.
If you think that they don't do much, then maybe you should think again, because the chances of that ink pen that you use every day, that uniform that you wear proudly, those Gatorades that seem to hit the spot during a super hot day, or practically anything that you get from the military more than likely happened because of your unit supply. Without them, you wouldn't have much to endure this tour of duty.
