TIKRIT, Iraq - Multi-National Division - North held a Memorial Day of Remembrance at Contingency Operating Base Speicher May 26 to honor the fallen Soldiers of their current deployment.

The Patriot Brass, a small group of Soldiers from the Task Force Iron Band, set the mood and played several patriotic pieces throughout the ceremony.

During the ceremony, there was a presentation with historical pictures of American Soldiers and the 78 Soldiers of MND-N who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

"To us, they are people -- Soldiers we knew. Men and women with names, faces and shared memories," said Maj. Gen. Mark Hertling, MND-N commanding general. "When looking at a formation, it's very easy to lose sight of the individual faces," Hertling said. "We should study each face and think about all the people who love and depend on that Soldier. That is when each Soldier's personal commitment to sacrifice is felt in very powerful ways."

Hertling read a quote from the actor Will Smith.

"I do not have to build a perfect wall today. I just have to lay a perfect brick. Just lay one brick," he read.

"I invite each of you to honor the fallen by making a commitment to lay one perfect brick each day," Hertling said. "Just one brick to honor their memories and to keep their selfless spirits alive, because they are our nation's very best and we owe them that, because of what they have given to us."

There was a firing of volleys and Taps performed just outside the door to complete the ceremony.

"(The memorial service was a) time to stop and reflect on the unbelievable sacrifices our Soldiers have made for our country," Hertling said after the ceremony.
