CAMP TAJI, Iraq - It is hard to consider a vehicle that is not at least 30 years old, to be old, by military standards.
For those who have been around for a while, the famous 2 1/2 ton trucks were here for what seems like centuries. These trucks were 30 and 40 years old before they were phased out of the system.
The Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle is the new, better-armored, more up-to-date vehicle used today. But, how will we dispose of the old Humvees.
The Army has a program here established to dispose of out-of-date Humvees. The program is known as the Redistribution Property Assistance Team.
The 776th Maintenance Company, 419th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade RPAT team has gained quite a reputation for itself. In less than half the time of the prior unit we replaced, our team has already exceeded the previous maintenance company's number of Humvees restored and turned over. The company's desire, speed and proficiency of fixing vehicles have created quite a stir around Camp Taji.
The RPAT team is a joint military force effort to revitalize the Humvee and sell them to the Iraqi government. This way the U.S. can dispose of these vehicles and the new Iraqi government will have a new vehicle at their disposal. In order to be transferred, the vehicles must meet the 10/20 level maintenance standards.
To meet these standards, the Humvees must be re-tooled. This means all problems, great and small, must be fixed. Sometimes this could be something small, such as fixing signal lights, or something much more like fixing a transmission or engine. An enormous amount of energy and planning has been put into this project by our company. There's a buzz all around Camp Taji about the results of our RPAT team. Recently the 100th vehicle was finished, which is a rate of about 20 vehicles per month. Knowing our guys, there is no telling how many they will finish before leaving the Middle East.
