INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – An Indiana National Guard fallen Soldier has been posthumously promoted. Army regulation and tradition allow a Soldier who is in line for promotion to receive the honor.
Spc. Brian J. Leonhardt, Merrillville, Ind. has been promoted to the rank of sergeant.
Sgt. Leonhardt was one of four members of the 713th Engineer Company killed by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat route clearance operations in Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan, Friday, Jan. 6.
In related developments, Pvt. Douglas A. Rachowicz, who was injured in the attack, was promoted to the rank of private first class.
Pfc. Rachowicz, 29, is from Hammond, Ind. and has been flown to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he remains in stable condition in a medically induced coma.
