"The military is keeping me out of some things that I shouldn't be doing, but couldn't avoid if I wasn't in," said Scott. Although he is only 21 years old, Scott has already progressed from Private to Sergeant. In his three years with the Arkansas National Guard, he has accomplished a lot and is ambitious about what more he can achieve during his military career. Scott serves as a radio operator for Sheriff's Net 16, which is one of the force protection responsibilities of the 1123rd Transportation Company, an Arkansas National Guard unit attached to the 1st Squadron,152nd Cavalry Regiment, an Indiana National Guard unit attached to the 1st Sustainment Brigade in support of Multi-National Division-Baghdad. Scott shipped off to basic training a mere 11 days after graduating from Osceola High School. He chose to be a truck driver and once he graduated from Advanced Individual Training, he was assigned to the 1123rd Trans. Co. Scott has volunteered for domestic missions with the 1123rd Trans. Co. He was part of the detail that transported another Arkansas National Guard unit to Albuquerque, N.M., for Weapons of Mass Destruction training in August 2006. Additionally, he volunteered to be a trainer for the company during its in-state deployment train-up. Less than a year ago, Scott became a father. His son, Joseph Scott, Jr., was born October 7, 2007, in Little Rock, Ark., while he was activated for mobilization. He has not been able to spend a lot of time with his son, but will make that a priority when he returns, declaring, "I have a lot of catching up to do." When he returns with the 1123rd from the current deployment, he plans to continue to advance in the National Guard and return to college at night to earn his bachelors in pre-med. He also plans to continue to work out, read, and "kick it" during his downtime back home. |
