Beanies for Baghdad making a difference!

LTC James Barker and Sara
EVANSVILLE, Indiana - Beanies for Baghdad continues to make a difference for our soldiers and the children of Iraq and Afghanistan. A grassroots program started back in 2003 by LTC James Barker and SSG Kirk Wallace noticed everywhere they went, they encountered children and no toys. LTC Barker, a father of two girls himself, tried to becomes friends with a little girl names Sara who would not respond to him. He remembered he had a beanie baby that his sister had sent him and he offered it to the little girl and she responded with a smile. This gesture of kindness resulted in a new friendship.

This became something they felt good about and appealed to the public for help and to this day over a million beanie babies, school supplies, winter clothing and numerous other items have been sent.

The program continues to add new Points of Contacts and their ultimate goal is to be able to give our soldiers something positive to look forward to and the opportunity to spread hope and joy to the children of a war-torn land. Long lasting friendships are made and children's tears are turned to smiles.
