Auction and Raffle Brings in $224,000 for Museum of Aviation

Steve and Nancy Rosenberg display the Thunderbirds Aerial Demonstration Team painting they purchased at the Museum of Aviation Foundation Auction. The painting was donated by Colonel Carl A. Buhler, Commander, 78th Air Base Wing at Robins Air Force Base and his wife Sharon. Colonel Buhler once served as a Maintenance Officer with the Thunderbirds Team.
WARNER ROBINS, GA - The Museum of Aviation Foundation's Auction and Raffle held Saturday, July 17 brought in a gross total of $224,000 in cash and in-kind value for the Museum of Aviation.  More than 1,000 people showed up to bid on a total of 517 items donated from local businesses and individuals - the most items ever donated since the auctions started 25 years ago.

Three raffle ticket holders became instant big winners. William and Vicky Sperlein of Centerville, GA won the top prize of $25,000 or a new car or truck The second place winner of $2,000 was SMSgt Richard Dawson, Kathleen, GA who works at Headquarters Air Force Reserve at Robins AFB.  Cade Daffin, owner of Awaken Spa in Bonaire, GA won the 3rd prize of $500. 

The large crowd was welcomed at the front door of the Century of Flight Hangar by Jimmy Faircloth, Mayor of Perry; John Harley, Mayor of Centerville and Jimmy Autry, Senior Vice President of Flint Energies.  Attendees enjoyed a Taste of Local Cuisine as 32 restaurants and caterers offered up everything from a roast pig to ice cream and chocolate muesse. Against a backdrop of the Museum's SR-71 Blackbird, the attendees made their way around several tables to bid on a large selection of items from artwork, furniture, tools, appliances and many gift certificates. 

The highlight of the evening was the live auction. Head Master of Ceremonies Sebie Lacey and his assistant Perry Swanson announced the items and auctioneer Heather Nardi called the bids.  The collection of live auction items included a limited-edition guitar autographed by the country group Alabama, a VIP hunting trip and appearance on the TV show Trophy Quest with star John Wilson, a cook book signed by U.S. Congressmen Jim Marshall and U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, a basket of items and signed books from chef and TV star Paula Dean and airfare and a back-stage tour of the TV show All My Children with WARNER ROBINS native and cast member Bobbie Eakes.

The event was organized by an all-volunteer committee headed by Chairman Steve Davison and co-chairs Jimmy Autry, Brian Grady and Shirley O'Neill. Volunteers included a group of airmen from the 116 Air Control Wing at Robins AFB  The Raffle Ticket Chair was Rick Drury and Chairman Emeritus was Dr. Dan Callahan who sold the winning ticket to the Sperleins.

"It was a great event and we want to thank all the businesses and individuals that worked so hard to make it a success," said Steve Davison who has headed up the auctions for the last several years.
