CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait - Members of the 452nd Ordnance Company, a Reserve unit from Aberdeen, S.D. received a second combat patch during their ten month deployment to Kuwait on April 20, 2011.
The unit arrived in theater on Oct. 6, 2010 and received their first combat patch under the 469th Sustainment Support Battalion, a Reserve unit from San Jose, Calif, on Dec. 7, 2010. The 469th was replaced by the 553rd CSSB on Feb. 1, 2011.
Lt. Col. Matt Melvin, Battalion Commander of the 553rd CSSB, placed the 4th Sustainment Brigade, also known as the 'Wranglers' combat patch to the right arm of 1st Lt. Dala A. McNew, 452nd's Company Commander. McNew then slapped the patch on the acting First Sergeant, Sgt. 1st Class John P. Naumann's right arm. Naumann went on to the place the combat patch on each squad leaders. The squad leaders received the command "Left face" and placed the patch on the right arm of the Soldiers standing next to them. The process continued until all the Service members received the 'Wrangler' combat patch.
The Wranglers' patch can be identified by the "W" or the two conjoined reversed chevrons and a green ivy leaf on a half- black and half-buff background, which are all tied together by a yellow border.
The "W" stands for the 4th Sustainment Brigade's name, 'Wranglers', and is adapted from their previous shoulder sleeve insignia with their history as part of the 4th Infantry Division. The countercharge of black and buff signifies teamwork and a cohesive unit. The contrast of these two colors refers to day and night around the clock vigilance. Buff is the primary color for Army support. The ivy leaf is modified from their history as the Division Support Command Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division.
According to U.S. Army regulations, Soldiers are authorized to wear a shoulder sleeve insignia for wartime service on their right arm to represent their deployment in a combat zone. The combat patch is worn under the American Flag to represent the unit in which they served under while deployed.
"This is my first deployment," said Spc. Trenice Pehrson of Aberdeen, S.D., "It has been a very positive work experience for me. I learned a lot and had the opportunity to get to know people from my unit."
The 452nd is comprised of Soldiers from other units, including detachments of the 295th OR CO from Lincoln, Neb. and Saint Josephs, Mo. Soldiers are also from Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota.
"The ceremony was executed very well," said Sgt. 1st Class John P. Naumann of New Market, Minn., who is the noncommissioned officer in charge of Ammunition Operations, "My first combat patch was very memorable and I can see how this ceremony is very important to all the Soldiers in our unit, especially for those who are deployed for the first time."
This is Naumann's third deployment. He deployed to Hungary in 1997 an, Iraq in 2005/2006.
The 452nd will be redeploying back to the United States in August 2011.
