BESMAYA, Iraq - Forty-four tank crewmen from the 9th Division graduated from the fifth class in the M1A1 Iraqi tank familiarization course at the Besmaya Training Center Nov. 18.

The training, which began Sept. 30, heavily emphasized hands-on performance over lecture type instruction. Specialized training consisted of individual crew station training, day and night tank driving, simulation training on the advanced gunnery training simulator, crew served weapons training, and day and night live-fire gunnery training.

Concurrently, four maintenance soldiers trained collectively for 97 hours on the tanks. Their training consisted of crew station training, track maintenance, and drivers training on the M1A1 tank and the M88 tank recovery vehicle.

Iraqi army Staff Maj. Gen. Samir Mahdy Basha, tactical training department commander, and Col. Abbas Fadhil Abdul Sahib, the Besmaya Training Center commander, were distinguished guests at the graduation ceremony.

The top two tank crews, who were also recognized as honor graduates, performed a live-fire demonstration and will return to their home units to continue doing their part to keep Iraq safe and secure.
