BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi Security Forces arrested two suspected terrorists Sunday during a joint security operation conducted in northeastern Mosul to capture a military commander for the Ansar al-Islam terrorist group, responsible for multiple attacks against security forces in Iraq.
One suspected terrorist was killed during the security operation.
Acting upon a warrant issued by an Iraqi court, ISF and U.S. advisors safely stopped two vehicles on Mosul public roads in order to arrest the Ansar al-Islam military commander, whose group fabricates mobile rockets and improvised explosive devices frequently used in attacks against security forces in the region.
The suspected terrorist in the first vehicle was questioned, identified as a suspected criminal accomplice of the warranted individual, and arrested without incident.
After the security team stopped the second vehicle, the lone driver did not heed instructions and proceeded to pull out a pistol from behind his back, pointing it towards security-team members. Perceiving an immediate threat to their safety, members of the security team engaged and killed the suspected terrorist. The identity of the suspected terrorist is still unknown at this time.
Following both vehicle stops, the security team searched a residential building from which the suspected terrorists drove both their vehicles. The location of the building was also confirmed by several previously-arrested al-Qaeda in Iraq members. Evidence obtained from the two vehicle stops confirmed that a significant weapons cache might be present in or near the building. An additional Iraqi security unit, the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division Iraqi Army, was then asked to augment the security team.
Within the building, the security team discovered a large cache of weapons and munitions. The contents of the cache included 20 shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles, several machine guns and AK-47 assault rifles, other assault weapons, several sniper rifles, rockets and rocket parts, mortar tubes and mortar rounds, mines, IED-making material, a robot that can be used to remotely transport IEDs, body armor, license plates, and night vision devices.
The significant amount of explosive material found at the cache site prompted the security team to expeditiously evacuate families from surrounding buildings for their safety. An explosives ordnance disposal team is currently at the scene, further evaluating the contents of the cache and determining how to safely dispose of the explosive material.
The security team found one individual within the building containing the weapons cache. Based on evidence gathered at the scene, ISF then arrested the individual, who is a suspected criminal accomplice of the warranted Ansar al-Islam military commander.
