BALAD, Iraq - Iraqi Special Forces detained three suspected criminals and 12 others in separate operations in northern Iraq July 9-11.

The Baqubah Company Special Weapons and Tactics team detained ten suspected members of the Islamic State of Iraq, a front organization for al-Qaeda in Iraq, in Minhil village, north of Baghdad July 11. The suspected criminals are believed to be using the village as a safe haven and are part of a network that operates out of Naqib.

In another July 11 operation in Mosul, the 2nd Iraqi Army Division detained a suspected criminal believed to be an experienced electrician within the ISI who wires improvised explosive devices. Reports indicate he makes and transports IEDs for a cell leader who orders the placement of IEDs targeting Iraqi Security and Coalition forces and personally detonates them. During the operation, IA also confiscated pre-made IEDs and several kilograms of a chemical substance.

Baqubah CSWAT detained a suspected AQI member July 10. During the operation, CSWAT encountered small-arms fire and identified IEDs, vehicle-borne IEDs and a house-borne IED.  No casualties were reported and all explosives were neutralized by U.S. Special Forces who assisted in the operation.

In another operation July 10 in Mosul, Iraqi Special Operations Forces detained a suspected ISI emir believed to have ordered IED attacks against Iraqi Security and Coalition forces. He is also said to be responsible for numerous intimidation attacks against local citizens.  ISOF also detained the suspected criminal’s brother, who is believed to emplace IEDs.

U.S. Special Forces detained a suspected ISI emir July 10 while on patrol in the Jazeera desert.  The suspect is believed to be responsible for facilitating criminal and foreign fighter movement across the Syrian and Iraqi borders.

"The continued presence of Iraqi Security Forces and their ability to detain these suspected criminals is likely to disrupt criminal activity in the northern Iraq," said Lt. Col. Neil Harper, a spokesperson for Multi-National Corps - Iraq.
