BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi Police arrested three suspected members of vehicle-borne improvised explosive device cells yesterday and today during two joint security operations conducted in Mosul and Baghdad.

Iraqi Police and U.S. advisors searched several buildings in western Mosul yesterday for an alleged member of the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) terrorist organization. The alleged ISI member is suspected of building VBIEDs and facilitating deadly attacks against civilians and security forces.

Based on security team intelligence, they pinpointed several locations frequented by the suspected ISI member. Iraqi Police searched multiple buildings and questioned those found on the premises. While conducting an on-scene investigation, the joint security team tested suspects for the presence of explosives residue and one suspect tested positive. Based on questioning and evidence gathered on scene, Iraqi Police arrested two suspected Mosul-based VBIED cell members.

In a separate security operation conducted today in southern Baghdad, Iraqi Security Forces and U.S. advisors searched a building for a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq leader believed to be responsible for multiple VBIED attacks in the region.

ISF arrested one suspected associate of the warranted individual based on preliminary questioning and evidence found at the scene.
