Blackanthem Military News BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi Security Forces killed a suspected Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) member and two criminal associates, and arrested one other criminal associate during joint security operations in northern Iraq Sunday and today.
ISF and U.S. advisors conducted a vehicle interdiction in eastern Mosul to apprehend a suspected AQI member, who is allegedly involved in bribing officials to enable the illegal release of detained individuals.
During the stop on Sunday, ISF identified a weapon in the hands of the front seat passenger and engaged the individual as he drew the pistol on the force. As the security force established control of the situation, the driver reached in an effort to retrieve the same pistol and was immediately engaged. The third, and rear passenger, also made an attempt to reach for the pistol and was also shot by the ISF.
Because the suspects exhibited hostile intent towards the security force, the ISF was within its authority to escalate force in a manner compliant with the rules of engagement to preserve the lives of ISF members and others. The incident resulted in the death of the warranted suspect and both criminal associates.
Information and evidence at the vehicle interdiction scene led ISF and U.S. advisors to search several buildings in eastern Mosul today, where one AQI criminal associate was arrested.
All joint operations are pursuant to a warrant issued by an Iraqi judge.
Iraqi and U.S. advisors conduct joint operations in accordance with the Security Agreement and in coordination with the Iraqi government to target terrorists seeking to disrupt the security and stability of Iraq.
