AL ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq - Marines from Multi National Force - West facilitated the release of 39 detainees from U.S. custody July 20, in Fallujah and Karmah.

MNF-W followed a detailed release process to ensure the security of the people of Anbar and the safety of the detainees were not in jeopardy following the release.  Prior to release near their place of residence, detainees participated in a public release ceremony where an oath of good citizenship and renouncement of violence was administered.  Individuals were then welcomed by their family and friends.

In accordance with the Security Agreement, U.S. and Iraqi authorities coordinate to ensure the safe and orderly release of detainees held in U.S. custody or the transfer of detainees who are wanted pursuant to a valid warrant.  The Security Agreement is an accord between two sovereign nations, Iraq and the U.S., and shows U.S. commitment to Iraq built on absolute Iraqi sovereignty.
