BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition forces killed one criminal and detained a suspected criminal during operations early Friday morning in Nasiriyah, approximately 120 km northwest of Basrah, in Dhi Qar province.

Based on intelligence information, Coalition forces targeted the location of a suspected financier of Special Groups criminals. Information gleaned from suspected Special Groups criminals already in custody showed that he also may be involved in counterfeiting passports and other documents used to illegally move criminals in and out of Iraq undetected.

With Iraqi Security Forces providing outer-perimeter security, Coalition forces advanced to the targeted location. As Coalition forces moved in, they encountered a man holding a rifle and magazine. After Coalition forces identified themselves to the armed man, he ran inside the house. The man then came back out of the house, this time with a loaded weapon pointed at Coalition forces. Coalition forces engaged the man and killed him. Immediately after, another man came from the house and picked up the loaded weapon from the first gunman. As Coalition forces engaged the second gunman, a woman appeared from the building and attempted to drag him back into the house, when both were shot. The wounded gunman and the woman were treated on scene and then transported to a Coalition medical facility for treatment.

Coalition forces continued to the targeted individual's location, where they captured a suspected document counterfeiter found to be in possession of counterfeit Iraqi money and documents. In addition, forces found an undisclosed amount of Iranian currency.
