Blackanthem Military News BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition forces struck another blow to the already-struggling Special Groups criminal organization after capturing two key leaders and another suspected Special Groups criminal during operations in the Rusafa district in Baghdad early Sunday morning.
Based on intelligence information, Coalition forces targeted the location of an Iranian-trained senior leader of Special Groups criminals in the Sadr City area. According to information provided by suspected Special Groups criminals already in custody, the reported agent of Iran is responsible for attacks against Iraqi Security and Coalition forces as well as kidnappings and smuggling of weapons from Iran to Iraq.
Coalition forces tracked the individual, who is known to flee to Iran to avoid capture, to a location in the Rusafa area and detained him without incident.
In a separate operation in the Rusafa district, Coalition forces targeted a leader of the Karkh area Special Groups criminal ring. Based on information gleaned from Special Groups suspects already in custody, he is a senior leader responsible for supplying weapons, money and logistical support to subordinate Special Groups commanders. He also provides fighters as reinforcements to areas in need - making his role crucial for sustained operations by Special Groups in Karkh.
Coalition forces entered the targeted individual's location where they captured him and one associate without incident.
The capture of these suspected criminals will likely lead to significant degradation of the Iranian-sponsored Special Groups efforts in Iraq.
