BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Basrah Special Weapons and Tactics team, with Coalition forces advisors, killed a suspected former leader of a criminal network in the Basrah Province June 20.

Acting under the authority of a warrant issued by the Basrah Court of Appeal, the SWAT team attempted to arrest the suspected terrorist, who was wanted in connection with planning attacks against Coalition forces.  As the SWAT team attempted to serve the warrant, the suspected terrorist exited the building and began firing a pistol at authorities. There was a brief exchange of gunfire and the suspected terrorist was killed.

"While Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition forces do all they can to avoid harming individuals during missions, the actions of the suspected terrorist posed an immediate and significant threat which led to his death," said Maj. April Olsen, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Arabian Peninsula spokesperson.
