Grenoble Ecole de Management's Personal Development & Managerial Centre (CDPM)  in partnership with the Institute for Biomedical Research (CRSSA), a branch of the French army, have begun a year-long study on Stress, its level and "treatment" at the heart of the management school.

An army-based study for the measure and relief of Stress

Grenoble Ecole de Management, in the heart of the French Alps
For over two years now, the CRSSA, with the support of a unique evaluation method developed by Grenoble's CDPM, has conducted a research on the effects of stress on its officers, including on army air corps serving in the Afghanistan war. The research consisted of comparing three groups of pilots based on objective (physical) and subjective (feelings) measures of anxiety with regards to whether or not officers participated to stress management programs some months before their departure for Afghanistan. The results clearly showed that the group who did not benefit from stress management schemes presented a higher level of stress before their departure compared with the other groups. When they returned home, this difference between the groups was even more noticeable. The researchers concluded that without benefiting from stress management advice, the recovery process is also longer.

This research allowed the CDPM and the CRSSA to certify an evaluation tool served to challenge the damaging effects of stress: the CDPM's « mindfullness » test, is based on the measure of self and collective awareness.

Students that are less stressed, managers that are more responsible

The CDPM, very much aware of the differences (physical threat) but also of the many commonalities (responsibility of the future of others, risk taking, professional anxiety) between army officers and managers, has decided to apply the research experience on the students of Grenoble Ecole de Management. Since October 2009, fifty students are tested over a 12 month period.

"If the same encouraging results are observed for the students as it was the case for the army officers, then there is no doubt that Grenoble Ecole de Management will put in place specific stress management schemes for its students, staff and business clients. The aim of this scheme is to add additional programs to our curriculum and activities to train future responsible manager, ready to successfully challenge stressful situation" explains Dominique Steiler, director of the Personal Development and Managerial Centre (CDPM).

About the Personal Development and Managerial Centre
