TAJI, Iraq - The Iraqi Counterinsurgency School recently opened up its second class in the Tactical Leader's Course here with42 Iraqi Army brigade and battalion commanders having completed the three-week course to date.

In opening remarks to the class, Iraqi Staff Maj. Gen. Sameer, commander of the Joint Headquarters, Tactical Training Directorate, provided advice to the commanders. "You should treat people professionally because you are soldiers. Your first priority is to serve your country and your people. I hope that you take this into consideration, while attending this course, so that we may bring back stability to our country."

The Tactical Leader's Course is designed to use seminar and realistic exercise simulations to teach battle-command techniques in counterinsurgency and civil security operations. The three-week course focuses on complex battle command tasks including effective management of a tactical operations center and tactical decision making in the counterinsurgency fight. Civil populace engagements and media interaction scenarios are also incorporated into the curriculum to demonstrate the importance of community relations in effectively executing civil security and stability operations. The Tactical Leader's Course has become a force multiplier that will continue to professionalize the Iraqi Joint Forces and enhance its capability to secure the people of Iraq.

Iraqi Staff Lt. Gen Hussain, deputy chief of staff for Training, Joint Forces Headquarters, served as the keynote speaker for this course and pointed out the responsibilities of the Iraqi officer corps to always maintain a professional and ethical example and push the boundaries of training to match the needs of a growing Iraqi society, "We must train to meet the highest standards expected of us by our country."

The Tactical Training Directorate is modeled on the U.S. Leader Training Program - Battle Command Training Program taught at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The staff from Fort Leavenworth partnered with the Iraqi and Coalition staff at the Iraqi Counterinsurgency School during course development and execution.
