Blackanthem Military News KABUL, Afghanistan - An 11-year-old boy who was shot in the head by insurgent fighters yesterday in the Nad-e-Ali district, Helmand province, died today.
After being driven by his uncle and arriving at the front gate of FOB Shawquat yesterday, ISAF forces medically treated the boy and attempted to save his life.
"The loss of innocent life is tragic," said Navy Captain Jane Campbell, IJC spokesperson. "This is another example that demonstrates their lack of regard for anyone but themselves."
ISAF contends the boy was killed by insurgents because of the trajectory of the bullet and the insurgent firing point. The uncle described the compound they were in when the injury occurred, which was 800 m south east of a checkpoint that would have placed the boy well within the insurgent firing arc.
Recently released data by UNAMA confirms that the total number of civilians killed last year in Afghanistan is regrettably up by 14%, predominately due to the insurgents and their indiscriminate use of road side bombs and other terror tactics which claimed more than 1630 innocent lives in 2009.
The UNAMA report specifically highlights a 28 per cent decrease in the number of accidental deaths caused by ISAF in 2009 compared to 2008. UNAMA attributes this decrease in accidental casualties as a result of ISAF's increasing effort to protect the Afghan population rather than engaging the insurgents directly.
