CRANSTON, RI - This past Winter, Major General Robert T. Bray, along with State Command Sgt Major John McDonough, traveled to Homestead ARB, in order to convene with and attend briefings by, members of the Special Operations Detachment-Global, Rhode Island Army National Guard, and also to meet with Army Brig. Gen. Hector E. Pagan, commander of (SOCSOUTH) and members of his command.
SOCSOUTH, is the Southern Command's subordinate unified command for special operations. SOCSOUTH's mission is to plan, prepare and when directed, conduct special operations in support of U.S. Southern Command strategies, plans, and operations. The AOR of the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) encompasses the land mass and surrounding waters of Latin America south of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico
The mission of the Rhode Islanders, assigned to the SOCSOUTH staff, was basically to provide support in the planning, directing, and executing of special operations in the area. This was accomplished by providing knowledgeable combat support and combat service support personnel.
The two day visit proved enlightening, and also seemed to build a high degree of esprit de corps, among the visiting General's staff and the SOCSOUTH members. General Pagan had high praise for the Rhode Island contingent and hoped that they would be involved in future missions.

That photo was not taken by Sgt. John Cervone, it was taken by yours truly
to include the one on top. Caveat: The SOD-G Rhode Island National Guard
troops concluded their tour of duty with SOCSOUTH in March. Maj. Mike
Manning is receiving the Defense Meritorious Service Medal in recognition
of his outstanding service to SOCSOUTH during his units year long
activation tour.
