GATESVILLE, Texas - Members of the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce and the city’s community leaders hosted a farewell dinner recently for Maj. Gen. Charles A. Anderson, Commanding General of First Army Division West, who retired after 32 years of military service.
The event was held at the Gatesville Fire Department where the city’s firemen prepared the meal for the group of Soldiers and community leaders.
"I love this fish," said Anderson to the group during his remarks thanking the city for their on-going support to Fort Hood, Division West and the Soldiers they train.
Anderson recalled how the town literally wrapped their arms around the Soldiers in the 1908th Medical Detachment and the 467th Medical Detachment days after the shooting on Fort Hood-providing gifts and special group meals before they left Fort Hood for their deployment and when they returned nearly a year later.
Since 2008, the citizens of Gatesville have grown closer to the 120th Infantry Brigade, the Army, and the mobilizing Soldiers and their trainers assigned to North Fort Hood. Anderson said actions speak louder than words and the town’s growing relations with Fort Hood demonstrates the real degree of caring Americans have for Soldiers.
The city of Gatesville often shows their hospitality through food. The Chamber hosts an annual Military Appreciation Dinner during the fall for all Soldiers.
"In the future, I hope we have an opportunity to properly welcome the Division West new commander and want to convey to the Soldiers that we welcome them and support them to the community," said Susie Gunnels, Gatesville Chamber of Commerce board member.
