STUTTGART, Germany - This morning 16 German and French senior military, business and community leaders boarded the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier currently operating in the Mediterranean Sea.
The group is hosted by Vice Adm. Richard Gallagher, deputy commander, U.S. European Command and is part of EUCOM's Community Relations Program. The program provides leaders, from various backgrounds, a chance to visit U.S. military installations and ships within the command's area of responsibility in order to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the role of EUCOM in Europe.
While aboard the ship, the visitors will meet with the leadership, talk with sailors, witness flight deck operations and observe an air power demonstration.
"It is our hope that visits like this continue to foster good relations with the communities we live in," said Gallagher. "We have a significant presence in Europe, and experiences like this leave an impression with the visitors that they will share with family members, friends and colleagues. It's a gesture that reaps huge benefits for the United States and continues to build friendships with our allies."
USS Eisenhower is one of the largest warships in the world, displacing 95,000 tons fully loaded and with a 4.5 acre flight deck and can support as many as 100 embarked aircraft. The 32-year-old aircraft carrier's two nuclear reactors can provide energy for more than 18 years of operation without refueling and can furnish power to propel the ship up to speeds greater than 30 knots.
