BAGHDAD, Iraq - About 900 new Iraqi police officers graduated in a ceremony held July 9 at Camp Dublin here.

This was the ninth course trained by the Italian Carabinieri since the start of their training in 2007 under NATO Training Mission-Iraq.

The specialized course was designed to provide further training for the Iraqi National Police to develop their skills. During the nine- week course, police officers studied operational planning, police procedures, police intelligence, counter-insurgency skills, weapons, combat skills, first aid and basic logistics. The course paid special attention to police ethics and human rights.

The graduation was attended by the commanders responsible for ensuring the high level of training taught in the course. These included Maj. Gen. Mike Milano, MNSTC-I director, Iraq Training and Advisor Mission, and Maj. Gen. Giuseppe Spinelli, deputy commander of NTM-I.

Graduation speakers included Staff Lt. General Hussein al-Awadi, chief of INP, Milano, and Spinelli. While Milano said he particularly appreciated the work done by the Carabinieri in training, mentoring and assisting Iraqi police officers, he highlighted the role and importance of the police forces in providing security to Iraq.  In addition to providing encouraging words for the graduates, Spinelli thanked Hussein for his program support, and the commanders of the 2nd and 4th Battalions, respectively Staff Col. Jassim Farhan and Col. Abd-al Kareem Khalif.

The graduates came from Iraqi National Police 3rd and 4th Divisions.

Col. Luciano Zubani, commander of the Italian Carabinieri, said, "The graduating class followed our training with interest and enthusiasm and was of a very high standard. We intend to keep this same high level of teaching in the future classes."

NTM-I trains, mentors and advises officers in the Iraqi Security Forces, in order to assist the Government of Iraq in resuming its important place in the international community and to improve the security of all Iraqi people.

NATO's cooperation projects include Iraqi Military Academy and Joint Staff College in Ar Rustamiyah. These institutions are included in the Iraqi National Defence University as well as the Iraqi National Defence College and the Defence Strategic Studies Institute. The Carabinieri, in addition to their work with the Iraqi National Police, also provide mentoring and advice to the Prime Minister's National Operations Centre, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior Command Centre, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence Joint Operations Centre and out-of-country training courses for Iraqi nationals at NATO schools.
