CAMP LEATHERNECK, Helmand Province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - U.S. Marines and Afghan soldiers and police are continuing clearing operations in key population centers along the Helmand River valley in an effort to secure the local population from the threat of Taliban and other insurgent intimidation and violence.
The Afghan individual whom approached the US position is a
Taliban-instructed test probe. His objective was to inform the Taliban on
the proximity of contact to the Allied position. The Taliban were watching
his approach, no doubt.
The US personnel operated in a manner appropriate for countering the
insurgency's objective. The "shooter" in this case can be commended for
his/her response.
