Blackanthem Military News, BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces, advised by Coalition forces, concluded a month-long mission called Operation Adalat in the Shah Wali Kot area of Kandahar province July 5.

The operation ended with a significant number of insurgents killed, two key leaders captured and no civilian casualties.  Captured were Mullah Jalil, a key leader in the area, and Mullah Mohammed Younis, a chief improvised explosive device assembler.

Elements of the 209th Kandak of the Afghan National Army, Afghan National Police and Coalition forces engaged enemy fighters throughout the operation with small-arms fire and air strikes in an effort to eliminate Taliban activity in the area.

Prior to the operation, the Taliban frequently used the area as a sanctuary to conduct operations against local Afghans, government officials and Coalition forces.

“We will continue to hunt down extremists operating in Southern Afghanistan,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force-82.  “Those Taliban leaders we target -- like those killed in this operation -- have been directly linked to deliberate targeting of innocent Afghan civilians, non-government agency personnel and Islamic Republic of Afghanistan officials.”

Afghan and Coalition forces continue to make steady progress in eliminating extremists throughout Southern Afghanistan capturing or killing large numbers of enemy fighters and advancing progress, peace and economic development on behalf of the Afghan people.
