FORWARD OPERATING BASE SALERNO, Afghanistan - Air and ground elements combine forces to protect Sabari District citizens from enemy fire, capturing recoilless rifle on Sept. 11th.
Soldiers from H Company, 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, reported indirect fire, and called for air support. Kiowa pilots from B Troop, 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry were on scene immediately, and located the recoilless rifle.
A recovery team was dispatched by Black Hawk Helicopters to recover the weapon.
"The recoilless rifle was a big find, because Sabari has been getting hit by that for months. Getting it off of the battle field will make a big impact on the area," said Cpt. Michael Lanzafama, the B Troop commander and Kiowa pilot.
No Coalition Forces or civilians were injured in the operation but more important to security forces in the area, a potentially devastating weapon was taken out of the insurgent's hands, leaving Sabari residents safer.
