A cache of over 100 kg of raw opium that was found in Lashkar Gah, Helmand Province.
KABUL, Afghanistan - An ISAF Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) assisted in the seizure of 100 kgs of raw opium, with an estimated street value of over one million US dollars, during an intelligence led operation in Lashkar Gar, southern Afghanistan, earlier this week.

The seizure occurred during the first joint patrol that had been planned and executed, by the Afghan National Army and the Government of Afghanistan's Law Enforcement Agency, while being mentored by the ISAF OMLT.

"The joint planning and conduct of this patrol proves the willingness of Afghan National Security Forces to work in conjunction with each other. It demonstrates their capacity and drive to bring law and order to Helmand Province," said Maj. Gary Wolfenden, the OMLT commander.

The ISAF mentored patrol was designed to target counter-narcotics and deter terrorist activity within the area. Acting on local intelligence, the patrol conducted the raid on premises in the District Centre of Lashkar Gah. The raid was hailed as a success, not only due to the narcotics found, but also because it allowed the Afghan National Security Forces to interact with locals and gain their trust which demonstrated the effectiveness of the OMLT process.
