Blackanthem Military News KABUL, Afghanistan - The Afghan National Army and ISAF soldiers successfully repelled a complex improvised explosive device ambush at approximately 9 a.m. today in Kunar Province.
Acting on credible intelligence that insurgents were planning a complex ambush on an ISAF vehicle patrol in the Korengal valley, a combined dismounted patrol of ANA and ISAF soldiers was dispatched to investigate.
Shortly after the combined patrol reached its planned position, insurgents initiated an ambush on an ISAF convoy traveling through the valley. The insurgents attacked the convoy with an IED, small-arms, rocket propelled grenades and machinegun fire.
The convoy and the dismounted patrol responded to the ambush engaging two separate insurgent elements with small-arms, machineguns, mortar, artillery fire and close-air support.
One ISAF servicemember received minor wounds when an improvised explosive device exploded under the vehicle he was riding in. The wounded ISAF servicemember was evacuated to an ISAF medical facility in eastern Afghanistan for observation. He was listed in stable condition at the time of this release.
The vehicle struck by the IED was disabled by the blast, but was recovered to an ISAF base.
In accordance with ISAF policy, the name and nationality of the wounded servicemember is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
