Afghans rebuild road through Uruzgan pass

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan villagers rebuilt a canyon passageway to reconnect the villages of Hesar and Gharam in the Deh Rawud district of Uruzgan province Wednesday.

The road project links Afghan farmers living north of the canyon to the only bazaar where they can sell their crops and purchase goods.

Several years ago, the villagers – under the supervision of the Taliban – built the original trail through the canyon but were not paid for their work. The Taliban later destroyed the trail isolating villages on either side, according to a U.S. special forces team leader.

The former trail is now a road, capable of handling pedestrians and vehicles. Workers used barriers – filled with gravel, dirt and rocks – to expand the surface area of the original trail and to protect the new road from the river running parallel to it.

The Afghan workers received wages and project guidance from U.S. special forces.
