KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF troops conducted a successful operation July 1 against insurgent compounds southwest of Kandahar city.

Afghan authorities became aware of the suspected insurgent activity and partnered with ISAF to deal with the threat. A joint operation was planned to investigate several compounds of interest in the area.

The mission involved troops from the Afghan National Security Forces; the Second Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group; the 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, from the United Kingdom; and ISAF aviation assets.

Afghan forces and soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, were inserted by helicopter into the area suspected of insurgent activities. Simultaneously, Afghan National Security Forces and troops from the Second Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group, established blocking positions using vehicles to ensure insurgent forces could not enter or leave the area.

As Afghan and ISAF troops searched compounds of interest; they observed armed insurgents in the area. In two instances, insurgent groups were engaged from the ground and by ISAF air assets.

During the air insertion, the tail rotor of one helicopter struck the ground as it approached the landing zone. The aircraft was temporarily disabled, but technicians were able to return the aircraft to a serviceable condition. The helicopter was flown back to Kandahar Airfield for further inspection.

Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF did not suffer any casualties during the course of this operation.
