KABUL, Afghanistan - Soldiers from the Afghan National Army's 205 Corps successfully secured the center of Musa Qala in Helmand Province today after several days of fighting.

With the support of ISAF forces, hundreds of ANA troops moved into the center this morning and met with little resistance. Taliban commanders had earlier fled the area as their resistance crumbled.

The action to retake the center - after several months of Taliban control - was greeted enthusiastically by local residents, whose safety had been of paramount importance to the liberating forces.

ANA and ISAF forces had spent the night consolidating their positions in the outskirts of Musa Qala. Today ANA forces started the final portion of the operation to retake the town.

The task now is to provide a safe and secure environment for the local people to be able to enjoy the benefits of the rule of law and reconstruction and economic development.

"Today the Afghan National Army restored freedom and democracy to the people of Musa Qala by removing the Taliban and their foreign fighters, said Brig. Gen. Gul Aqa Naibi, Commander 205 Corps. "The people of Afghanistan should be proud of their fellow-countrymen's exceptionally brave and professional military action to ensure the rightful authority of GIRoA has been restored to the town."

The military operation began Friday with an air insertion by US airborne soldiers in support of the ANA and elements from the United Kingdom and Estonia.

"We anticipate that there will continue to be some resistance from Taliban fighters," said Brig. Gen. Carlos Branco, ISAF spokesperson. There is a likelihood of Taliban pockets that will have to be cleared."
