FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, PA. - Francis J. Harvey, the Secretary of the Army, visited Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) Wednesday to observe the modernization of the installation and check on the progress of the 56th Stryker Brigade.
In addition to the Stryker Brigade, his tour included visits to the Joint Emergency Center, High Risk Entry Facility, Digital Training Campus, and the Eastern Army National Guard Aviation Training Site.
Before the tour began the Secretary watched a presentation to familiarize himself with the Pennsylvania National Guard as well as FTIG and its surroundings.
“Where do I sign up?” he asked after the presentation. Harvey also asked if locals are allowed to hunt on FTIG property. “Because that’s the way to win the hearts of Pennsylvanians,” the former Pennsylvania resident joked.
At the conclusion of the tour Harvey said he was very impressed with what he had seen.
“We have great admiration for our citizen soldiers,” said Harvey. The National Guard has made a lot of progress since the Global War on Terror began, he said. “We’ve got to keep this momentum going and not believe the false assumptions that there will never be another conflict,” he said.
FTIG is currently undergoing $100 million worth of construction projects including new ranges, training sites, and the development of the Stryker Brigade.
