CAMP AL ASAD, Iraq - Marines from Regimental Combat Team 2 launched Operation Fajr Jadeed (New Dawn) in western Al Anbar province Dec. 21, to energize a return to normalcy across the region.

As Iraqi Police continue to expand their responsibilities in the cities and along major roads, the military is reducing its presence in those areas. Coalition Forces and Iraqi Soldiers are removing barriers and concertina wire. A number of small outposts and patrol bases were closed or turned over to local police to reduce the impact of the military presence on civilians. More than a dozen smaller posts will be deconstructed and the areas cleaned over the course of the operation.

"The Iraqis are feeling secure enough to conduct business, go to school, meet openly and discuss their future, and live a life without fear of reprisal," said Col. H. Stacy Clardy III, commander of RCT-2. "They're tired of war, and adjusting Coalition Force visibility among the population is indeed progress towards a peaceful solution and normality."

Coalition training teams are partnered with the police in the cities. Marines and Iraqi Soldiers continue to support the police by targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq fighters away from population centers, in the desert regions where small pockets still attack civilians.
