CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE SPEICHER, Iraq - Four violent extremists were killed after attacking a U.S. forces patrol in Ninawa province at 10 p.m., Jan. 7.

A platoon from Bravo Troop, 3rd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division was conducting a patrol outside the city of Mosul in accordance with the Iraqi Security Agreement.

The platoon identified the four men digging a hole to emplace an explosive device alongside a major roadway 18 miles south of Mosul.

As the platoon drew closer to investigate, the four men started firing small-arms weapons and throwing hand grenades at the Soldiers.

The platoon returned fire and killed the four violent extremists.

A U.S. explosive ordnance disposal team used a demolitions robot to destroy the improvised explosive device.

Iraq Security Forces later arrived to the location and removed the bodies of the dead extremists at 2:43 a.m.

The 3/7CAV is from Fort Stewart, Ga., and assigned to Task Force Marne.
