CRANSTON, RI - North Providence firefighters have gotten a reputation around the state, and it was on full display at the Fruit Hill Fire Station this past Winter. The department's training division put on a decontamination demonstration for a group of visiting first responders, military and emergency officials from the Bahamas, at the request of the Rhode Island National Guard. Three firefighters joined the demonstration that included suiting up some of the visitors in decontamination suits and inflating a decontamination tent. The visitors all seemed impressed with the hands-on demonstration. Inspector Ernest Hanna, of the Bahamian Police and Fire Department, stated how impressed the delegation was with the equipment and with the knowledge that was being displayed.
In the post 9/11 world, the United States has not only built up its own abilities to respond to hazards and emergencies, both manmade and natural, by disbursing hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to local communities, in order for them to purchase both new equipment and to be instructed in new training methods, but it has given each state an international partner. As we all know, Rhode Island's partner is the Bahamas and over the last few years members of Rhode Island delegations and delegations from the Bahamas have met to discuss new ideas and to implement new procedures, along with the University of Rhode island forming a union with the Bahamian Scholastic Institutions.
Members of the Bahamian Delegation went on to explain that they deal with the same chemicals and hazards in the Bahamas as we do in the United States. They expressed the urgency they felt to become more educated and guided in order to become trainers and facilitators for their associates back home. They also expressed their feelings that the programs were helpful in many ways and they always return home with a wealth a knowledge to pass on to their peers.
