Sgt. 1st Class Donald Smith, a native of Jonesville, S.C., HHC, 751st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, prepares to inspect a Soldiers weapon to ensure it is clear. Smith served as the small arms fire officer in charge during the training event.
AL ASAD, Iraq - Soldiers of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 751st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade recently conducted training on the small arms range here.

The training familiarized Soldiers on performing function checks and firing their assigned weapons.

Soldiers fired the M9 pistol and the M4A1 rifle.  Soldiers are required to qualify with their weapons yearly according to Army standards.  A majority of Soldiers carry the M4A1 rifle.  It is effective at ranges of 150 meters or less and has a maximum effective range of about 500-600 meters.  Qualification requires that a Soldier hit at a minimum, 23 out of 40 targets.

Soldiers also used this training session to familiarize themselves with proper breathing techniques as well as proper stances.  Three firing positions are required to qualify with the M4A1 - prone-supported, prone unsupported, and kneeling.
