CAMP ATTERBURY JOINT MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ind.- Soldiers from the Texas Agribusiness Development Team flew half-way around the world on Christmas day, but not on Santa's sleigh. They did, however, bring gifts for their family and friends from Afghanistan after completing a year-long deployment.
The 65-member team arrived at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center on Christmas day for their demobilization process. They are scheduled to head home just before the New Year.
Lt. Col. Michael Rockwell, deputy commander of the Texas ADT, said he was glad he was back in the United States and mentioned how proud he was of the success of the mission.
Their mission included teaching the Afghanistan people better farming techniques in the field and teaching the business aspect of farming distribution while furthering agriculture development.
"We built a slaughter facility to help change the health and sanitation of the meat," said Rockwell. "Now health inspectors check the quality of the meat and control the slaughter point, because before they slaughtered the animals in the street and had the blood just run down into ditches."
The Texas ADT also surveyed a key location for a fish farm.
"The fish farm will give them a new crop [rainbow trout], and the farm will help them have multiple crops of fish a year and an aquaculture building will allow them to raise their own fish," said Sgt. Marty Conricote, a hydrologist for the Texas ADT.
"This fish farm will affect the local community and add a new agricultural crop to the area and by adding fish to their diet it will help improve their nutrition," he said.
After Soldiers check off their demobilizing check list, they pack their bags filled with gifts and wait patiently to head home.
"It feels great to be back in the states. If I can't be home at least I am on my way home," said Conricote with high spirits.
