CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq - Joint Security Station Khaser was officially turned over to the government of Iraq during a ceremony held at the JSS, in Ninewa province, Aug. 2.
Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 64th Armored Regiment, 2nd "Spartan" Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, and soldiers of the Iraqi Army's 5th Brigade, 2nd Division attended the ceremony.
"This is a great day for the Soldiers and people of Iraq," said Lt. Col. Ross Coffman, commander 1/64 Armor, of the handover of JSS Khaser to Iraq's 5/2nd.
The transfer of JSS Khaser to the Iraqi Security Forces marked the ninth military facility the Spartan Brigade has handed over since deploying to Iraq in October, including the former Contingency Operating Site Q-West and JSS Ashura in eastern Ninewa province. The handover of military bases and facilities to ISF control is part of President Barack Obama's plan for the drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq, which he reiterated during a press conference, Aug. 2.
Colonel Rebwar, 5/2nd Iraqi Army commander, to whom JSS Khaser was signed over to during the ceremony, said that he will always be grateful for the bond between his soldiers and those of the Spartan Brigade.
"It is sad to be separated from our American brothers; however, I truly hope that we will continue to work together and build upon our great work, and that the U.S. Soldiers who have finished their deployment return home safely to their families and loved ones," Col. Rebwar said.
