Camp Fogarty, East Greenwich, RI - On Sunday, June 7, 2009, the Rhode Island National Guard held the first "I AM Strong" Obstacle Course Competition at Camp Fogarty, East Greenwich, RI. Two person teams attempted to compete for the fastest total time at completing the obstacle course. The day itself was extremely warm and there was very little breeze to cool the competitors down. The winners of the event were two members of the "Governors Own", 88th Army Band, SGTs Russell Miller, and John Richards Jr.
The Rhode Island National Guard is taking steps to prevent sexual assault and sexual harassment with in its ranks. The "I AM Strong" program educates service members that it is a duty to protect and assist others who may be suffering from sexual assault or harassment. With this in mind the RING hosted the obstacle competition to exemplify the ethical struggles that all Soldiers and Airmen confront throughout their careers and their continued exceptional conduct.
The competition is a reminder to National Guard members that they need to maintain the high physical, mental and ethical performance standards required by the Rhode Island National Guard.
