PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. - Indian Island officials conducted an educational outreach presentation, Dec. 4, at Fort Warden State Park to inform residents here about their mission.
Nearly 40 patrons visited the two-hour presentation, where they could walk around to 12 different stations and gain a perspective what NAVMAG Indian Island does.
"We really wanted to reach those parts of the community who don't get a chance to get involved in what's happening in their area," said Melissa Kilgore, administrative assistant for human resources, financing and budgeting for NAVMAG Indian Island. "This is a place where those people can come to us and say 'this is what we want to know and this is how we feel about it.'"
The stations discussed the history of NAVMAG Indian Island's mission, to include, operational risk management, depleted uranium management, community mutual aid, environmental stewardship, training exercises, community outreach, working with local tribes and explosives safety.
"It is important to raise awareness," said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (FMF/SW) Felix Poteate, Naval Hospital Bremerton.
Each station had an expert to speak to the guests and answer any questions they may have about their specific topics.
"We are reaching out to the public to answer any questions they may have," said Cmdr. George Whitbred, commanding officer NAVMAG Indian Island. "I want to let them know we are very safe and we keep the public in mind. They are our neighbors."
