TIKRIT, Iraq - Former President John F. Kennedy once said, "The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining."

Through the partnerships formed between the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Riley, Kan., and the Iraqi Army, the sun is shining as both parties work side by side to make a better and stronger Iraq.

On Oct. 24, Soldiers from the701st Brigade Support Battalion, 4th IBCT, welcomed members of the Iraqi Army's 4th Motor Transport Regiment to see how the battalion conducts motor pool and maintenance operations. The Kansas-based Soldiers, who are part of Company A, showed the 4th MTR how they conduct motor pool layouts and stage their vehicles.

"This was done in an effort to show the 4th MTR our process instead of simply trying to explain it to them," said Capt. Robby J. Capt. Gabehart, the commander of Co. A.  "It is our intent that they see the way we do it and refine their own process.

As the responsible draw down of U.S. forces take place, the partnership and interaction between 701st BSB and the 4th MTR will help prepare the Iraqi unit for future operations.

"As we look to do joint missions in the future [this partnership] will help to give Alpha Company, 701st BSB, more flexibility in our missions," said Capt. Gabehart. "[It also] allows the 4th MTR to gain proficiency in their skills while putting an Iraqi influence on support operations in the area."

The 4th MTR will be solely responsible for providing security and supplies along the main and alternate supply routes.  Capt. Gabehart said that will prepare the IA for success and longevity after his unit is gone.
